Establish IP between two computers using two handheld amateur radio transceivers.
Materials
Each node in the network consisted of:
a Quansheng TG-25AT tranceivers,
a custom interconnect cable,
an Ozi-Data kit,
two short 3.5mm stereo plug to 3.5mm stereo plug patch leads,
a USB to serial adaptor,
an OLPC XO-1 laptop (or any computer with sound and USB sockets),
Software
Each node had the following software installed:
Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 (Lenny) for i386,
the soundmodem package from Debian,
the telnet and telnetd packages (for testing),
Procedure
install the software,
connect the equipment,
run ''soundmodemconfig'' as root, following the HowTo:SoundModem, and be sure to tab out of any field you change before you File -> Quit,
run ''soundmodem'' as root,
use ping or telnet against the other host.
Of course it is very very slow, at 1200 bits per second. Some
protocols need timeouts increased to compensate. SSH is doable, but
the cryptographic packets at the start of the connection cost a huge
time.
